Soundscape for Osaka EXPO 2025

Client : Osaka EXPO 2025
Execution : Soundscape Design
Role: Music / Sound Director & Producer

I served as the music director and producer for the outdoor soundscape across the entire site of the Osaka–Kansai Expo 2025.
Across the venue, approximately 600 speakers delivered a continuous sonic experience from opening to closing each day.
The concept was “Ensemble of Life”—a living soundscape woven into the very fabric of the site.

The Expo grounds were divided into seven zones, each with its own theme and world-building. Together with seven composers, we crafted distinct soundscapes for each area:

  • Ground
• Sky
• Water
• Forest
• Field
• Festival
• Life

Each zone’s sound evolved in real time, responding to time of day and weather conditions.
Wind, light, rain, the movement of people—these elements interacted with the audio to create a constantly shifting, living sonic landscape.
Rather than simply “music that plays outdoors,” the aim was to design sound that breathes with the space itself. Visitors shared that the experience resonated deeply with them, and the project received strong reactions from many fields.

Awards:

● Technical Direction Awards – Gold Prize (Physical Experience Division)
My sound brief (direction sheet) for the composers received high praise and was unanimously selected by the judges for the Gold Prize.

● Good Design Award – Best 100 (OPEN DESIGN 2025)
The project was recognized as a generative design commons that integrates design, art, and sound into a collaborative experience—spanning the design system, site graphics, and the soundscape.
Together with seven composers, we implemented a soundscape of unprecedented scale and complexity, utilizing roughly 600 speakers.
The generative and dynamic acoustic experience—designed around the themes of each zone—was also highly acclaimed.
